Hospital volunteer changed lives of many
This is being written on behalf of Charles Smith. A recent feature article was published Jan. 4 on the front page of the Altoona Mirror regarding his kindness toward others.
Smith was the father of my dear friend, L’Wanda Smith Greenlaw from Altoona Area High School class of 1977.
Smith recently passed away, and this is such a huge loss to the Altoona community. He was known to be a barber for more than 40 years in this area. How I remember him is during his time as a volunteer at the Altoona Hospital (now UPMC Altoona).
He volunteered specifically in the dialysis unit at the hospital.
More than 30 years ago, I remember covering for a social worker in the dialysis unit where I met this wonderful man.
He always greeted me and everyone around him so warmly.
He would keep me updated on the status of his daughter, L’Wanda and her family.
During his time in the dialysis unit, I remember seeing him change the lives of so many dialysis patients by providing understanding and caring to them.
He was such an inspirational man, and I wanted to write this to acknowledge the positive effects he had on so many individuals.
Charles Smith will be missed.
