Congressmen must support Trump probe

With the firing of James Comey, Donald Trump’s recent admission that he was thinking about Russia when he fired Comey and the reports that Trump demanded personal loyalty from Comey, it is now more pressing than ever that an independent investigative commission be formed to investigate Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.

If Trump is truly innocent, an independent investigation is the only way to credibly clear him of any wrongdoing. No one will believe the findings of such an investigation unless it is truly independent.

And if Trump is guilty, then an independent investigation is absolutely needed to make sure all the facts come to light.

Yet, neither Senator Toomey nor either of the local House representatives — Bill Shuster in the 9th District and Keith Rothfus in the 12th — have called for an independent investigation.

This is mind-boggling and unacceptable.

There is now no rational reason for objecting to an independent investigation.

Toomey, Shuster and Rothfus need to put partisan politics aside and do what is in the best interest of the nation by supporting an independent investigation.
