Diligent road crews deserve lots of credit

We have had a relatively mild winter in spite of these recent days.

Annually, Altoona does not get nearly as much snow as most nearby area communities such as Cresson, Gallitzin, State College, Bedford, etc.

But we have had a number of noteworthy snowfalls that demanded the attention of our city roadway crews.

For nearly 40 years I have served on various highway committees starting with the Chamber and on into the state. Through those years I developed a trait of driving around the area, mostly in the city at the end of the snow storms, checking on related road conditions.

A number of years ago at the end of one of those storms, a senior employee of Ward Trucking, with whom I had a scouting affiliation, stopped at my home for a meeting.

I was not home, so he asked Mary Ann where I was. She quickly replied, “You know he is nuts! After every storm he drives around checking on the road conditions, mostly in the city.”

I showed up apparently just after Mary Ann’s comments.

Joe said, “I just heard you are nuts. So, how are the roads?”

The facts are that I am proudly impressed with our area road crews — Altoona, Logan Township and PennDOT. I have been around for plenty of years, and they deserve to know that.

I hear the complaining from time to time, and I challenge those complaints.

Keep up the good work. I am pleasantly impressed.
