Halloween experience better than scary

Thursday evening, Oct. 27, I was standing on our front porch handing out treats to youth dressed in all sorts of Halloween costumes. I was impressed that nearly everyone said thank you, but what really made my evening was one young man, perhaps 6 or 7 years old. He was dressed in military fatigues. I complimented him on his uniform and asked him what he was dressed as. He responded proudly, “I’m a Navy Seal.” As we were having a short conversation, he noticed the U.S. flag that is displayed from our porch. Without any coaching, he stepped back, saluted and sang our national anthem. His mother later commented that it is his favorite song. Folks, it is for the young people dressed up like jedi, turtles, princesses, Navy Seals and for generations not yet born that we have a moral responsibility to get informed, vote and hold government accountable at every level. Elections are not a game. They have real-life consequences. It was a former U.S. president who warned us that, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” Faith and the freedom to practice it, what a wonderful legacy to leave behind.
