Volunteerism thriving in Hollidaysburg
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to two very important organizations in Hollidaysburg: Friends of the Hollidaysburg Area Library (FHAL) and the Hollidaysburg Area Women’s Club (HAWC).
FHAL has been raising funds and recruiting support for the Hollidaysburg Library since the early 1980s.
This group of intrepid volunteers has raised many thousands of dollars through membership fees, selling pecans and wreaths at Christmas, through the annual wine and trivia event and countless yard and book sales.
FHAL also helps to run the Summer Reading Program, which helps keep children’s reading skills strong during the vacation months.
It’s no surprise that we now have one of the finest free public libraries in the state. I urge everyone to browse at the FHAL book sale at the Hollidaysburg Library on April 14.
HAWC, established in 1938, is another incredibly active group of volunteers. They raise thousands for youth scholarships, community improvements (like the Kids Kingdom Play Park and Canal Basin Renovation), shelters for women and teens and dozens of other non-profit efforts.
HAWC runs a massive annual Thanksgiving food drive supporting food banks, free school meals and individual families in need. Please consider supporting HAWC at its annual fundraiser, to be held Saturday at the Lakemont Casino.
