BG shows vision in snow

Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School has recently implemented the use of technology during times of inclement weather to continue the students’ learning at home.

I believe both students and teachers would benefit from using technology during unexpected weather conditions, and all school districts should push to implement them in their schools.

Although most students enjoy sleeping in on snow days, they don’t enjoy having to extend their school year to make up those snow days.

By giving students iPads to use for educational purposes, specifically on snow days, the students not only get to sleep in if they want to, but they also don’t have to extend their school year because of a lost school day.

Students were very much in favor of having the freedoms that came along with these virtual school days, such as completing assignments at their own pace and in the order they prefer, as long as they complete their assignments within the allotted time period given.

Another benefit to having the option of technology is to minimize the risks of deciding whether or not to cancel school because of uncertain weather conditions.

School districts hesitate when making decisions because of public criticism, interrupting the learning process, and maintaining the students’ safety. With the freedom and capability of technology, there would be less risk factors to account for during the decision-making process.

Teachers also benefit from using technology to keep their students on track with the lessons planned for the day without breaking up the learning process.

Lesson plans get fulfilled, and students don’t miss out on vital information due to lack of motivation at the end of the year.

Using technology to continue the learning process during unexpected weather conditions is beneficial for everyone involved and should be implemented by those affected yearly by these conditions.
