Against UPMC takeover

I have not heard many comments from our elected officials in Blair County or Altoona about the debacle taking place regarding UPMC taking over Altoona Hospital.

First of all, the administration of the hospital buys out our only other hospital in Altoona, Bon Secours, and then they close it.

Now they are selling the hospital to UPMC, and if you happen to have Highmark as your health provider they will either not treat you or make you pay as an out-of-network facility which could double your costs.

That’s nice. Altoona Hospital is a couple of miles away from my house, but if I want to go to an in-network hospital, to help lower my costs, I will have to drive to Pittsburgh about 100 miles away.
