Mildred Hawkins Turner

Mildred Hawkins Turner, 95, Altoona, died Saturday at Maybrook Hills Re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion and Healthcare Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Spartanburg, S.C., daughter of the late Frank Joe and Luzon (Lussardi) Hawkins. On Sept. 13, 1941, she married Ralph McMillan Turner in Landrum, S.C., and he preceded her in death in October 1988.

Surviving are two sons: Ralph McMillan Turner III of Phoenixville and James Marshall “Jack” Turner of Spartanburg, S.C.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Volney D. Hawkins; and a number of very dear and loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three children: Robert Frank Turner, Steven Gray Turner and Barbara Elaine Turner; and four siblings: J.R. Hawkins, Frank Hawkins Jr., Elnora Hawkins Wells and Barber Hawkins.

Mildred graduated in 1941 from Spartanburg High School. She received an associate degree in 2003, graduating with her granddaughter, Gretchen, in computer studies from Penn State. She retired in 1990 as a supervisor of quality control from Warnaco, Altoona, after 21 years of service.

She was of the Pres­by­te­ri­an faith. Mildred enjoyed cooking and baking, making candy, leather goods, painting pottery, computer work and Facebook.

Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2019, at Jones Funeral Home, Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, Chaplin Rebecca Shuster officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Spartanburg, S.C.
