Joseph Edmund ‘Joe’ Knepper Jr.

Joseph Edmund “Joe” Knepper Jr., 87, Brooklyn, Md., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at his home.

He was born in Altoona, son of Joseph E. Sr. and Adae Mae (Brown) Knepper.

Joe graduated from Altoona High School in 1949, and he was still in contact with his remaining friends from his high school days. He continued his education at Penn State, taking two years off to join the U.S. Navy, after which he returned to Penn State and received his bachelor’s degree in 1956.

In November 1959, he married Patricia Ann Sherrad, in San Diego, Calif., subsequently having four children together. The two had numerous moves with their children and finally settled in Maryland in 1965. Throughout his life, his profession was predominantly in architectural landscaping and it remained one of his passions. In 2005, his wife, Pat, went to be with the Lord.

The last decade of his life he was blessed to share with his partner and beloved friend, Ingrid Kleinsorg. The two made and shared many wonderful memories and had many mutual interests, especially sharing their German heritage; which included several German clubs; the Baltimore Kickers; Edelweiss, of which he was president at one time; The German Society; and Fidelitas. Also significant in their relationship, and their German heritage, was the Zion Church of Baltimore, having served on their council. They both were regular attendees and participants for years.

Joe lived his life to the fullest, and enjoyed and loved his family and friends. He loved to joke and smile, enjoying a beer here and there. Joe will be missed by all whom had the privilege of knowing him, some dating back 60+ years.

Surviving are three children: Kristy Matonara, Joe E. Knepper III and wife, Colleen, and Nancy A. Knepper; six grandchildren: Joshua Knepper and wife, Christina, Bridget Knepper, Peter Knepper, Matthew Knepper, and Nick and Heather Doherty; a sister, Lucinda A. Shellenberger; and his loving partner and friend for the last 10 years, who was by his side for the last several critical months, Ingrid, and her family, Kornelia Gracia and Jeffery Jones, his buddy, and their family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Mark Knepper, whom he deeply missed; and a son-in-law, Steve Matonara.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2019, at Zion Church, 400 E. Lexington St., Baltimore, Md. A reception will be held for family and friends following the service at the church hall. Interment will be private and at a later date. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chester, Md.
