Joanne M. “Queen Bee” Stephens

Joanne M. “Queen Bee” Stephens, 85, Duncansville, died Monday, April 1, 2019, at Hollidays­burg Veterans Home after an extended illness.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Stanley M. and Madeline M. (Crist) Luther. She married Eugene A. Stephens on Feb. 7, 1959, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. He preceded her in death on March 16, 1974.

Surviving are four daughters: Ann Marie (Tom) Makowiecki and Karen L. (Tony) Zanfino, both of Hollidaysburg, Barbara J. (Dale) Young of Mifflinville and Theresa E. (David) Chandler of Duncansville; 10 grandchildren: Aaron and Sean Makowiecki, Adam and Jessica Zanfino, Kalyn Weinberg, Deven Young, Kierstin Stockum, Lauren and Maura Chandler and Rachael Bamhart; 10 great-grandchildren; five siblings: William S. Luther of Duncansville, Mary Catherine Douglass of Reisterstown, Md.; Michael H. Luther, of Richmond, Va., Lucinda A. “Cindy” Bryan of Goose Creek , S.C., and Patricia L. Sipes of Ponte Vedra, Fla.

She was preceded in death by three brothers: Richard T. Luther, Gerald F. Luther and James Joseph Luther.

Joanne was a 1951 graduate of Mount Aloysius High School, Cresson. She retired in 1997 as a secretary at Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona, with 25 years of service.

Joanne was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Altoona. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, painting, art and bowling.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2019, at Jones Funeral Home, where a Vigil for the Deceased will be held during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at St. Rose of Lima Church, Altoona, with Father Brian Saylor officiating. Committal Rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
