Adam Robert DePiro, M. Ed.

July 12, 1981 - March 8, 2019

Adam Robert DePiro, 37, Altoona, passed away peacefully Friday morning at his home after a courageous seven-year battle against cancer.

He was born in Altoona, son of Robert J. and Kathleen A. (McGraw) DePiro.

Surviving are his parents; a brother, Lee A. DePiro; his grandmother, Andrea D. (Dale) McGraw; and a huge circle of loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Rocco E. DePiro, Ann M. (Iachini) DePiro and Curwood M. McGraw.

Adam was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish, where he completed nine years of education and, as an adult, taught bible school and confirmation classes.

He was a 1999 Bishop Guilfoyle graduate and letterman. His love for the game led him to play four years of Division II football at Shippensburg University. Adam continued his education at Mount Aloysius College, graduating summa cum laude in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History/Political Science.

In 2009 he went on to earn a Secondary Education Certificate. During that time, he served as the first president of the Mount Aloysius Student PSEA chapter and worked as a substitute teacher at the Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center.

During Adam’s years as a beloved social studies instructor, coach and mentor at the Tyrone Middle School, he completed his Master’s Degree at Saint Francis University. His most recent position was as an adjunct professor at Mount Aloysius College.

He leaves a legacy as one who loved teaching and cared deeply about his students.

Adam was a patriot who loved the American flag, history, geography, traveling, cooking, movies, his 40 years of National Geographic magazines and LEGOs. As a member of the Gearbox Union he was a hard working fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Adam was a gentle giant – a kid at heart. He brought joy and laughter wherever he went; Adam seemed like one of the many superheroes he adored.
