Mrs. Kay E. (Suckling) (Burke) Wright, 87, Martinsburg, died Friday afternoon at The Village at Morrisons Cove.
She was born in Roaring Spring, daughter of the late Edwin and Anna (Curfman) Suckling. She was twice married, first to the late Max W. Burke and then to the late James W. Wright.
Surviving are a son, Jan Burke of Roaring Spring; two daughters: Ann Noel (Dane) of Roaring Spring and Amy Dillon (Robert) of Martinsburg; five grandchildren: Dane Noel (Lisa) of Altoona, Kayla Noel of Roaring Spring, Richard Feltenberger (Nina) of Washington, Pa., Emily Yerty (Kyle) of Hanover, Md. and Lauren Kohan (Nathan) of Johnstown; and four great- grandchildren: Collin and Luke Noel, Chase Mock and Brynn Yerty.
Mrs. Wright was a 1949 graduate of Roaring Spring High School. She was active in the band and chorus programs. She tutored fifth graders in spelling and social studies for a number of years and was employed in the banking and insurance industries. She retired from Washington National Insurance Co. in 1983 after 20 years of service as head cashier. She was a member of the Hollidaysburg Alumni Chorus and was a past president of the Roaring Spring Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was a member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg.
From the age of 18, her lifetime love of music led her to be the organist and choir director of several area churches, including the Roaring Spring Reformed Church, now Christ Church; Trinity United Methodist Church, Roaring Spring, First United Methodist Church in Hollidaysburg and the Greencastle Church of the Brethren.
She also performed piano concerts with Arlene Pittman in the Roaring Spring area and she introduced a new pipe organ to the church community of the Greencastle Church of the Brethren.
Her hobbies were arranging silk flowers, and working jigsaw puzzles and word search puzzles. She loved being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
At the request of the deceased there will be no viewing, but friends will be received from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, in the Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring, where a memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Inurnment will be made in Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Kay’s memory may be given to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602.
