John P. ‘Spook’ McCullough

John P. “Spook” McCullough, 90, Altoona, died Wednesday evening at his residence, after an extended illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Edward and Curly Fonda (Fetteroff) McCullough. On Aug. 3, 1949, he married Vivian A. Condon at Grace Methodist Church, Altoona. Vivian preceded him in death on March 14, 2016.

Surviving are two daughters: Claudia M. Brown and husband, Michael and Jennifer J. Haulman and husband, Charles, all of Altoona; two grandchildren: Lindsey L. Port of Altoona and Zachary C. Haulman and wife, Allison, of Hollidaysburg; and two great-grandchildren: Reagan and Blake Port.

John was a 1947 graduate of Altoona High School and a graduate of Altoona School of Commerce. He furthered his education by taking numerous courses at Penn State. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He was employed as a public accountant for over 60 years, working almost until the time of his passing.

He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, Altoona; Hiram Lodge No. 616 F&AM; Jaffa Shrine, where he was a member and Past Captain of the Patrol/Directors Staff and a member of the Jaffa Hillbillies; and he was a member of Park Hills Country Club. John and Vivian thoroughly enjoyed attending the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Association convention each year.

John enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events, golfing and vacation trips to Stone Harbor. He had a fondness for Irish Setters and had many throughout his lifetime.

Friends will be received from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019, at Fairview United Methodist Church, 2214 Fifth St., Altoona, where a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, the Rev. Sallie Swenson officiating. Arrangements are by Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 East Pleasant Valley Boulevard, Altoona, PA 16602 or to the Fairview United Methodist Church, 2214 5th St., Altoona, PA 16601.
