Robert J. BeirLair, 83, Altoona, passed away Sun­day at UPMC Altoona.

He was born in Houtzdale, son of the late Helen M. BeirLair. On June 13, 1959, he married Mary Margaret Noel.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Anne Akers-Smith (Michael Smith) of Annandale, Va.; four grandchildren: Maxwell, Elon, Asher and Aiden; a great-grandson, Noah; and a brother-in-law, Barry Noel of Martinsburg.

Robert was a graduate of Houtzdale Woodward Bris­bin High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and he had a master’s degree from Penn State University. He retired as program director for the Altoona Center and was previously a school teacher.

He was a very devout Catholic and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, where he was a Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Gallit­zin Lions Club. He volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, was a PIAA Swim official for 40 years, a Healthy Steps in Motion leader, a Blair County election officer, an officer in the Altoona Hos­pital Cardiac Support Group and volunteered to raise money for the Altoona YMCA.

He had a great love for music and played the drums in many bands. Robert was also an avid fan of Penn State football.

Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, Father Lubomir Strecok celebrant. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Robert’s memory be made to the charity of one’s choice.
