Samuel Frederick “Fred” Watson, 71, Altoona, died Tuesday at UPMC Altoona.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Russell and Carrie Lang. On June 27, 1970, he married Cecilia Musselman in Altoona.

Surviving are his wife of more then 48 years, Cecilia; a son, Fred Watson (Wendy); two grandchildren: Chris Watson and Kali Watson; four siblings: Kenneth Watson of Johnstown, Linda Highduch of Altoona, Corine Cowan of Norfolk, Va., and Grace Ritchey of Altoona; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by seven siblings: Estella Wise, Marlene Harris, Carol Nagl, Susan Jo Watson, Francis Watson, Jim Lang and Sondra Boyles.

Fred was a graduate of Altoona High School and went on to train professionally to operate heavy equipment. He volunteered and served in the U.S. Navy with the Navy Seabees in Vietnam and was a member of Juniata VFW Post Fort Apache and the VVA — the Vietnam Veterans of America. He retired from Altoona Area School District after many years of service in custodial services.

Fred attended Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Altoona, and enjoyed golf, hunting and fishing.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until the noon memorial service Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata, Pastor Jason Mauk officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy and the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard.
