Harold J. ‘Jim’ Sutton Jr.

Feb. 11, 1931 – Sept. 4, 2018

Harold J. “Jim” Sutton Jr., 87, Altoona, passed away Tuesday at his residence.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Harold J. Sr. and Virginia (Helman) Sutton. He married Sarah Tipton in April of 1949.

Surviving are his wife; three sons: James J. and Robert J. Sutton, both of Altoona, and William D. Sutton (Michelle) of Duncansville; a daughter, Mary Jane Walter of Altoona; 10 grandchildren: Traci, Timothy, Laura, Annette, Robert, Michael, Jennifer, Heather, Susan and Lloyd; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Timothy Sutton.

Jim was a graduate of Altoona High School and served in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He retired from Sylvania as a head machinist after 37 years of service.

He was a lifetime member of the Bavarian Aid Society, National Rifle Association and was former president of Juniata Boone Rod and Gun Club. He also played professional baseball with the Rapid City South Dakota Indians and played in many of the area baseball leagues. He previously managed the George B. Kelley Junior Federation Prospect team and played softball for Sylvania for many years.

Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at noon Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, at the funeral home Monsignor Robert Mazur officiating. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Jim’s memory to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 201 Chestnut Ave., Altoona, PA 16601.
