Esther ‘Shorty’ McElheny

Esther “Shorty” McElheny, 94, Ashville RD, died Friday at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg.

She was born in Ashville RD, daughter of the late Leo and Catherine (McConnell) Watt.

Surviving are five children: Mary Louise “Sis” Yeckley, Lois (Butch) Moyer, Linda (Robert) Naylor, Ray (Diane Benzie) and Jake (Lisa Long); 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, with one to be born in October; four siblings: Jerry (Bette), Jess (Nancy), Patsy Grant-Lewis and Donnie (Mary); two sisters-in-law: Margaret Watt and Alice Watt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, on Oct. 20, 1967; a son, Joseph, on Dec. 24, 1969; a son-in-law, Dick Yeckley, on Nov. 30, 2016; two sisters: Doris and Helen Risban; and three brothers: Edwin, Elmer and Raymond.

Esther retired from housekeeping at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing after 22 years of service and then did housekeeping work for St. Thomas Catholic Church rectory for 21 years.

She was a member of Chest Springs and Cresson Senior Citizens centers, the Altar Rosary Society and St. Thomas Catholic Church, Ashville.

Esther enjoyed playing bingo, cards and gambling.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, at Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, where a vigil service will be held Friday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Ashville, the Rev. Robert Reese celebrant. Committal will be at St. Thomas Cemetery, Ashville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Esther’s memory be made to Garvey Manor Nursing Home.
