Sister Marietta Therese, SSCJ, 56, a perpetually professed Sister of the Congre­gation of Sister Servant of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, entered into eternal life on Friday at St. Joseph Convent, Munster Town­ship, Portage, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Philadel­phia, daughter of Julia Teresa (Hack) and the late John Francis Hanley, and she was named Emmelia Marthamay Hanley.

She leaves behind her fellow religious sisters who loved her dearly, as well as her beloved mother and siblings: Teresa, Tom (Sandy), Raphael (Patty), Basil, Macrina (Denny) Hennessy, Miryam (Emil) Ghaly, Sister Jacinta Miryam, SSCJ, Gregory (Maria), Junstin (Jen) Lazarus, Albertus and Marthamary (Tom) Rinkavage.

Sister Marietta Therese entered the Congregation of Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on Dec. 28, 1980, and she professed her first vows June 21, 1983, and her perpetual vows June 21, 1988, in Cresson. She observed the Silver Jubilee of her religious profession on June 21, 2008, at Sacred Heart Province, Cresson.

She obtained a Bachelor of Science (summa cum laude) in education from Saint Fran­­cis University and an Master of Arts (magna cum laude) in theology and catechetics from Notre Dame Catechet­ical Institute (Christendom College). Throughout her religious life, Sister Marietta Therese served the glory of the Most Sacred Heart with love and zeal in the areas of education, administration, pastoral care, youth, retreat, summer camp and music ministries in the Archdio­cese of Philadelphia and in the Dioceses of Altoona-Johns­town, Metuchen, Scran­ton and Wheeling-Charlestown.

She will forever be remembered for her joy and enthusiasm. She loved with her whole heart and soul and was a true spiritual mother to all of those who were privileged to know her. In her last illness, she distinguished herself with the same beautiful spirit of trustful surrender and love that characterized her entire life.

The sisters are truly grateful for every kindness exten­ded to Sister Marietta Therese, and they are especially grate­ful to her doctors and health care providers, the Francis­can Friars TOR, the Very Rev. Father John Byrnes, Father Leo Arnone and Father Matthew Reese.

A vigil for the deceased will be held at 2 p.m. Tues­day, Aug. 7, 2018, at Saint Francis Xavier Church, Cresson, beginning with a rite of reception and led by Father Angelo Patti with visitation until 8 p.m. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, at St. Aloysius Church, Cresson, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Very Reverend John Byrnes celebrant. Arrange­ments are by Kennedy-Anderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 233 Keystone Ave., Cresson.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sister Marietta Therese’s name may be given to the Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, 866 Cambria St, Cresson, PA 16630.
