Raymond J. ‘Ray’ Bathurst

Raymond J. “Ray” Bathurst, 97, Alexandria, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday at Mount Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after an extended illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Raymond Ralph and Margaret Mae (Dilbert) Bathurst. On Aug. 22, 1942, he married Lorraine Lois Wise at Bethany Lutheran Church in Juniata, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 18, 2001.

Surviving are two daughters: Marsha Faith Nagler and Darlene Rae Garrett; five grandchildren: James Nagler, Carrie Nagler, Lindsey Schourek, Erin Fillare and Kristin Garrett; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Elmer “Harry” Bathurst.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Pamela Joy Bathurst; two sisters; and a brother.

Ray was a 1938 graduate of Altoona High School. He was a decorated WWII pilot and retired in 1969 from the U.S. Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. Afterward, he worked for the Social Security Administration.

He was a member of Nativity Lutheran Church, Alexandria, Va. Ray was a porcelain artist and member of the International China Painters Guild.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, Pastor Drew McCaffery officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
