Melvin Grimes, 88, Ashville, died Thursday at UPMC Altoona.
He was born in Ashville RD, son of the late Homer and Elva (Litzinger) Grimes. On April 26, 1958, he married Betty Berkhimer in Portage.
Surviving are his wife, Betty; four children: Galen (Tracy) of Altoona, Sandy (Jen) of Chesapeake City, Md., Lance (Rebeca) of Millville, N.J., and Vicky (Alan) Pettenati of DuBois; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack (Betty) of Buffalo, N.Y.; a sister, Joan Kowalski of Gallitzin; a sister-in-law, Theresa Grimes of Ashville RD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Daryl; a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Grimes; two brothers: Elliott and Haden; and two sisters: Elaine Doughty and Joyce Hricko.
Melvin was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. For over 30 years, he worked at the Sam Rea Shops, Hollidaysburg, until his retirement in 1995.
He enjoyed rabbit and deer hunting, coaching and playing baseball; he was a member of the Eldorado Altoona City League team that won numerous championships. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes, shooting pool at the Blair Senior Center and was awarded over 150 medals from Senior Olympic Games.
Friends will be received from 5 until the 8 p.m. funeral service Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville. Military rites are in charge of local military organizations.
