Leola G. Smith

Leola G. Smith, 98, Newry, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday at her home of 57 years.
She was born in Bedford County, daughter of the late Mick Heilmeier and Cora Cox.
Surviving are three sons: Terry and wife, Judy, of Newry, Richard of Altoona, and Steve and wife, Cathy, of Newry; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther “Luke” on April 27, 1976; a son, Ron; a great-great-grandson, Bennett Walker; four sisters: Patty Fether, Helen Strait, Mariam Brightbill and Betty Hockenberry; and a brother, Richard Flick.
Leola and her husband, Luke, founded Smith Hardware and Supply in Newry.
She was a 1938 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, and was a member of the Hollidaysburg YMCA Auxiliary and Hollidaysburg Alumni Association and attended Foot of Ten Bible Church for many years.
Leola was an amazing mother, grandmother and friend to all those who knew her. She was a kind and gentle soul whose caring and thoughtful ways will be cherished in memories. She loved spending time with her family and friends, traveling, cooking, reading and writing. She also enjoyed watching hot-air balloons at her home in New Mexico.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park, where a service to celebrate Leola’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2018.
