Dr. Charles M. “Chick” Hill, 90, Altoona, passed away Monday at UPMC Altoona, after a brief illness.

He was born in Juniata, Altoona, son of the late Helen Byler. On March 23, 1949, he married Lois Tromm at Bethany Lutheran Church, Altoona.

Charles was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife; four children: Susan Alexander (Jake) of Salisbury, N.C., Karyn Cadle (Doug) of Lancaster, David Hill (Kathy) of Charlotte, N.C., and Douglas Hill (Tom) of Portland, Org.; six grandchildren: Adam and Matthew Cadle, Margaret and Jacob Alexander, Skylar Mearing (Matt) and Ethan Hill; a great-grandson, James Mearing; a sister, Carol Detwiler of Duncansville; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles was a 1945 graduate of Altoona High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in education. He retired as Superintendent from the Altoona Area School District in 1984 after 14 years of service. He began a second career at Saint Francis University as Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and retired in 1992 after eight years.

Charles was an active member of Kiwanis for many years, serving as secretary and president. He was also past president of Allegheny Education Broadcast Council, Pennsylvania State Study Council, Phi Delta Kappa at Millersville State University and of The Pennsylvania State University Education Alumni Society. He was a member of the Fairview Methodist Church and actively volunteered in his community.

He loved to read and play golf with his friends. But what made Charles most happy was spending family time camping, backpacking and hanging out at the pool.

At the request of the family, all services will be private. Interment will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery.
