Kenneth Duane Reed, 97, a resident of Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidays­burg, formerly of Altoona, died peacefully at the home after a short illness.

He was born in Burgetts­town, son of the late Harry and Blanche (Miller) Reed. He met his beloved wife, Naomi P. Evey, in Philadel­phia, where they both served in the U.S. Navy. They married there on Feb. 6, 1945.

Surviving are a daughter, Heidi of Albuquerque, N.M.; a son, Mark and wife, Martha “Marty,” of Wilmington, Del.; six grandsons: Stephen, Dr. Edward (Joyce) and James (Margaret) Melkun and Christopher (Niki), Kevin and Adam Reed; three great-grandsons: Miles Melkun, Reed Melkun and Lucas Reed; and two great-granddaughters: Mira Melkun and Evie Melkun.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi; a daughter, Marilyn Melkun; and a sister, Lois Evey.

Duane graduated from Union High School, Burgetts­town, and went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Washington and Jefferson College. He served as pharmacist’s mate Third Class in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46. He was employed as chief chemist for the Pennsylvania Railroad and retired in 1981. He belonged to Rotary Inter­national, volunteered for SCORE and served on the Altoona Area School Board. He was a member of Mardorf Methodist Church, Altoona.

Duane was a man of many interests. His love of music, reading and gaining knowledge was an inspiration to all who knew him. He enjoyed conversations and sharing stories. He had a fantastic memory. He was a kind, caring and humble man. His interests included amateur radio, photography, camping, woodworking, radio controlled airplanes and oil painting. He loved driving his convertible to Garvey Manor, where he volunteered for the last 16 years. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and coworkers at Garvey.

Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2018, and from 11 a.m. until noon on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at The Good Funer­al Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park, where a funeral service will be held at noon on Tuesday, Pastor James House officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Garvey Manor Nursing Home, 1037 S. Logan Blvd., Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.
