Joseph Russell Breslin

Joseph Russell Breslin died Friday, July 6 2018, in Towson, Md.
He was born in Altoona and attended Altoona High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March 1945 and was honorably discharged in July 1946. He continued his military service by enlisting in the U.S. Army in July 1949 and served as a cryptographer. He went to Army Officer Candidate School and was appointed as a commissioned officer in 1951. He retired from the U.S. Army in December 1969 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After his retirement from the Army, he owned and operated Mary Moppets Childcare Center in Laurel, Md., from 1972-90.
He was married in November 1950 and had five children. Joe and his family lived in a number of places during his military service, including Alaska, Germany, Japan and Hawaii. He resided in Maryland at the time of his retirement from the Army and later bought a home in Punta Gorda, Fla. During the last 20 years of his life, he divided his time between Florida and Maryland.
Joseph was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Community in Laurel since 1960. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Fleet Reserve and the Elks. He served on the West Laurel Home Owners Association and was instrumental in the development of the West Laurel Swim Club. He was an avid boater and fisherman and enjoyed golfing, dancing and socializing. He was known for his wit, sense of humor and renegade approach to life and love.
He is survived by five children: Kathy, Janice, Mike, Marianne and JoAnne; five grandchildren: David, Dylan, Claire, Nadia and Mitchell; five great-grandchildren: Melinda, Joseph, Heidi, Audrey and Carly; and his close friend, Sally.

8:30 p.m. Wednesday,
July 18, 2018, at the family-owned Ruck Towson Funeral Home Inc. 1050, Towson, Md. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2018, at St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Community, 114 St. Mary’s Place, Laurel, Md. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
