Stevens

Carol Bradford Stevens, 95, Scituate, Mass., a former longtime resident of Hollidaysburg, passed away in the early hours on Monday in Weymouth, Mass.

She was born in Florida, daughter of the late John Richard Bradford and Daisy E. (Bullard) Richardson. Carol was the beloved wife of the late John K. Stevens, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage. She and her husband raised their family in Hollidaysburg.

She was a devoted mother to: John Stevens and spouse, Renata, of Stratham, N.H., Brooks Stamm and spouse, Dennis, of Kennesaw, Ga., Bradford Stevens and partner, Joan Henry, of Woburn, Mass., and Annie Stevens and spouse, Chris, of Scituate, Mass.,; a cherished grandmother to: Mac Stevens and spouse, Candice, of Chaska, Minn., and their sons, John and Ethan; and a loving sister to: Bradford Edwin Richardson and spouse, Cheryl, of Boston, Ga.

She was preceded in death a sister, Patsy Bradford.

Carol was the longest living breast cancer survivor in the country, and that fueled her energy and enthusiasm to live life each day to the fullest. She was devoted to education and child literacy, and she spent her career being an educator and administrator in the public school system. She was ahead of her time, developing elementary programs based on skills, not grades, and kindergarten reading programs based on skills, not phonics. She was also active in her church and her community, and she fought endlessly for the preservation of historical properties.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2018, at Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham, Mass., with a reception to be held afterward at Hingham Historical Society, 34 Main St., Hingham, Mass. An additional service will be held at 11:30 a.m. June 27, 2018, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 315 Jones St., Hollidaysburg, with a reception to be held afterward at Blairmont Country Club.
