The Rev. Monsignor Timothy P. Stein

The Rev. Monsignor Timothy P. Stein, 60, Altoona, died Thursday at the rectory at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception, Altoona.
He was born in Johnstown, son of the late Charles H. and Josephine A. (Ferramini) Stein.
Surviving are a sister, Elizabeth Kinley and husband, Michael, of Jefferson, Md.; two nieces: Laura Catalani and husband, J. Tyler, and Emily Kinley; a great-niece, Eleanor Grace Catalani; and an aunt, Virginia Ferramini.
Monsignor Stein was a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, and he was a graduate of Pontifical College Josephinum, Columbus, Ohio, where he received a master’s degree in divinity.
He had been serving as pastor of St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception, Altoona, for the past 14 years. In addition to his pastoral duties, he was editor of the Altoona-Johnstown newspaper, The Catholic Register, for the past 29 years.
Monsignor Stein was ordained on May 19, 1984, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, by Bishop James Hogan. Monsignor Stein’s priestly ministry included assignments as a parochial vicar at Sacred Heart, Altoona, from 1984-86; at St. John the Evangelist, Lakemont, from 1989-91; at St. Michael the Archangel, Hollidaysburg, from 1991-96; as pastor at St. Monica, Chest Springs, from 1996 to 2004; and at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception, Altoona, from 2004 to the present.
In 2001, Monsignor Stein was appointed chaplain to His Holiness. He was a member of the Catholic Press Association of the U.S. and Canada, where he served on the board of directors from 1998 to 2001, and he also served as treasurer from 2000-01.
There will be a Reception of the Body service at 2 p.m. today, April 23, 2018, at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church, 1405 Fifth Ave., Altoona, where friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m., a Vigil for the Deceased and a rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m., and a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, by the Most Rev. Bishop Mark Bartchak. Committal will be held at St. Bartholomew Cemetery, Wilmore. The Rev. Monsignor Stein is also survived by a great-uncle, Frank Benfatta. Arrangements are by The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona.
