Clair F. ‘Smitty’ Smithbower

Oct. 22, 1950 – April 14, 2018

Clair F. “Smitty” Smithbower, 67, Loretto, passed away Saturday at Hillview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Altoona.

He was born in Spangler, son of the late Charles F. and Irene Emma (Van Nest) Smithbower. On Sept. 8, 1973, he married Mary Lou Miller in Hastings.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years; a daughter, Gina Smithbower-Zabrosky; a son, Craig (Stephani Smearman), all of Gallitzin RD; four grandchildren: Nathaniel and Emma Zabrosky and Ellie and Sophia Smithbower; three siblings: Fred of Loretto, Rita (David) Lloyd and Walter (Jane Newill), all of Ebensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Smitty was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device, Vietnam Service Medal W/1 Bronze Service Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a member of the UMWA, Traditional Anglers of PA and the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, where a vigil service will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto, the Rev. Aron Maghsoudi, celebrant. Committal will be in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by local military organizations.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Smitty’s memory be made to the Loretto Community Volunteer Fire Company, 181 St. Mary St., Loretto, PA 15940.
