The Very Rev. Father George Arseniu

June 9, 1924 – March 8, 2018

The Very Rev. Father George Arseniu, 93, Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Altoona, died Thursday in Raleigh.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Vasilios and Paraskeuve (Zosimas) Arseniu. In September 1953, he married Carolyn Xenos in Huntingdon, W.Va.

Surviving are his wife; two children: William (JoLynn) Arseniu of Raleigh, N.C., and Joanne Arseniu of Durham, N.C.; a grandchild; a brother, Christ Arseniu of Altoona; a niece, Karen Pappas of Duncansville; and a nephew, Jason C. (Stephanie) Arseniu of Harleysville.

He was preceded in death by two sisters: Kathrene and Eva Arseniu.

Father George was a graduate of Altoona High School and of Holy Cross Seminary in Brookline, Mass. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was stationed aboard LST 706 and he received three Battle Stars.

He was a Greek Orthodox priest and served for 60 years. He was a priest at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Raleigh, N.C., and he had previously served at St. Demetrius Greek Orthodox Church in Waterloo, Iowa, and at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Albuquerque, N.M. He retired as an inmate grievance investigator and as Chaplin for the North Carolina Prison System with 45 years of service.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Raleigh, N.C. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2018, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Raleigh, N.C. Interment will be in Raleigh. Local information by Jones Funeral Home, Altoona.­­
