Rudolph J. ‘Rudy’ Vorndran Sr.

Rudolph J. “Rudy” Vorndran Sr., 81, Altoona, passed away Monday at Maybrook Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Rudolph L. and Wilhelmina (Schneider) Vorndran.
Surviving are a son, Rudolph J. Vorndran Jr. of Altoona; a daughter, Heidi (Wayne) Cusick of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a grandson, Kevin Duncan Jr.; a brother, Thomas Vorndran in Texas; four sisters: Pauline Marzo, Hilda Gordon, Cathy Vorndran and Christine Betar, all of Altoona; and a friend, Carolyn in Florida.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Odrechowski.
Rudy was a 1955 graduate of Altoona High School and a U.S. Army veteran. He retired as a member of the police force of the Altoona Police Department, and he also retired as a security guard for Bon Secours Hospital.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona. He was a lifetime member of Bavarian Aid Society, and he was also a member of Fraternal Order of Police, Unter Uns Society, Mid Atlantic Air Museum, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Mountain Top Sportsman’s Association, Cesare Battisti Club and the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum.
He enjoyed photography, carpentry, bowling, gardening and traveling. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, Monsignor Timothy P. Stein celebrant. Committal will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Rudy’s memory be made to a charity of one’s choice.
