John G. Bender

John G. Bender, 85, passed away with grace and strength on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, at Kobacker Hospice House in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by family.

He was born in Hollidaysburg, son of the late Ferdinand and Margaret (Burger) Bender.

Surviving are his loving wife, Patricia; three children: David (Cheryl Focht) Bender, Barbara Bender Pietro and Mary (Harry) Knight; five grandchildren: Jeremy and Maya Focht, Alexander and Nicholas Pietro and Eleanor Knight; a niece, Carol Bender; and many, many friends.

John served in the U.S. Navy and earned a master’s degree in business administration from Duquesne University. He dedicated his entire 40-year career to being a federal employee, retiring in 1993 as a director of finance in the U.S. Depart-ment of Energy.

For many years, he was a resident of Forest Hills Borough in Pittsburgh, and in retirement, he distinguished himself in community service. He was a volunteer for Friends of the Squirrel Hill Public Library.

Brilliant and detail-oriented, John showed his caring nature by improving the efficiency of everything that he touched.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Jan. 12, 2017, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, Monsignor Stanley Carson celebrant. Interment will be held at Green Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, Columbus, Ohio.
