Carmel J. Fernicola, 83, a resident of The Lutheran Home at Hollidays-burg, formerly of Altoona, passed away Thursday at the home.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Raffaele and Mary (Campanero) DelMonte. On Aug. 11, 1955, she married Joseph F. Fernicola at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Altoona, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1994.

Surviving are a daughter, Deborah A. Fernicola of Altoona; a son, Joseph M. Fernicol of Altoona; a sister, Helena Kulak; an aunt, Jenny Campanero; two sisters-in-law: Rose Rubino and Geraldine (Patrick) Brannan; a brother-in-law, George Pacifico; many nieces and nephews; and all of her friends at the home.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia; a brother, Benny DelMonte; two sisters-in-law: Mary Cherullo and Jeanette Pacifico; and three brothers-in-law: Alford Rubino, Joseph Cherullo and Joseph Kulak.

Carmel was a 1952 graduate of Altoona Catholic High School and a graduate of Altoona School of Commerce. She was employed at the A&P corporate office in Altoona, where she met many of her longtime friends.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Altoona, and she worked at the school for many years.

Carmel enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking and gardening and loving her kitty, Mandy. Small in stature, she had an inviting personality that made everyone feel welcome in her presence.

Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday,

Dec. 10, 2017, at Santella Funeral Home, Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held Sunday evening. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Altoona, Father Ron Osinski celebrant. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
