Don W. “Herk” Ammerman, 77, Tyrone, passed away peacefully Friday with his family by his side at UPMC Altoona.

He was born in Altoona, son of Don W. “Kotz” and Grace (Cump) Ammerman.

He was twice married, first to Connie Hollenbach, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 15, 1964, he married Merle Louise Stonebraker at First Presbyterian Church, Tyrone.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Wendy (Greg) Ammerman of Pittsburgh, Kelly (Rob) McKnight of Pittsburgh and Desiree Ammerman of Bellemead; a sister, Doris “Mert” Robison of San Diego, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

Herk taught art class at Tyrone Area High School for 35 years, retiring in 1997. He also served as athletic director, coach and trainer at various times during his career. He earned the Order of the Arrow as a young man, was a lifetime Penn State Alumni member, member of PSEA, NEA, Tyrone Elks Lodge 212 where he was past Exalted Ruler, and the Ancient Gastronomic Order of Rattling Reptiles.

Known as “The Indian,” he was a consummate outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, hiking the Appalachian Trail with his daughter and friends and spending time at the beloved Colerain Hunting Camp with the “guys.” He loved raising and spending time with his dogs.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, at Cox Funeral Home, 3784 Warriors Mark Path, Warriors Mark, where an Elks service will be held at 8 p.m., and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church, 102 W. 13th St., Tyrone. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church, Tyrone.
