Jerome S. ‘Jerry’ Roberts

Jerome S. “Jerry” Roberts, 77, Cresson, died Thursday at UPMC Altoona.

He was born in Cresson, son of the late Joseph P. Sr. and Edith (Hite) Roberts. On June 8, 1963, he married Barbara Johnson.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Scott and wife, Cindi, of Naperville, Ill.; two grandsons: Zachary and Ian; and six siblings: Jeff, Joseph P. Jr., Justin and Jay, all of Cresson, Mary Jane Crilley of Erie and June Chiappone in Florida.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Eugene; a sister, Josette; and his parents-in-law, James and Louise Johnson.

Jerry was a 1958 graduate of Cresson Joint High School where he played football. He was a 1963 graduate of Lock Haven State College, receiving a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education, and he also received a master’s degree in health and physical education from West Virginia University. He was inducted into the Lock Haven Hall of Fame and received national recognition with the Little All-American while playing football at Lock Haven.

He first began his teaching career at Bellwood-Antis School District, and then he spent time at Keith Junior High School, Altoona. Later, he taught at Penn Cambria School District, teaching health and physical education and coaching football, wrestling and track before retiring in 1997. For 13 years, he also coached football at Saint Francis University, Loretto.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and Summit Country Club, both of Cresson, as well as Summit Athletic Club, Altoona. Jerry was an exceptional wood carver, and he enjoyed golfing, gardening and yard work and travelling, both in this country and abroad.

At the request of deceased, there will be no public viewing or visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, at St. Francis Xavier Church, Cresson, the Rev. Leo Arnone celebrant. Committal will be at the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson.
