Earl B. Cunningham
Earl Blandon Cunningham, 94, Frederick, Md., formerly of Altoona, passed away Sunday at Kline Hospice House, Mount Airy, Md.
He was born in Huston Township, son of the late Levi and Minnie (Fisher) Cunningham.
Surviving are a daughter, Christine Bickle and husband, William, of Damascus, Md.; a grandson, U.S. Navy Cmdr. Erik M. Bickle and wife, U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Nicole Scherer, both currently stationed in Yokosuka, Japan; two great-grandsons: Andrew and Landon Bickle, and their mother, Sarah C. Bickle of Mount Airy, Md.; a brother, Clark E. and wife, Phyllis, of Spruce Creek, Va.; and three sisters: Virginia Moore of Tyrone, and Zoe C. Westcott and Geraldine Gorman, both of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen S. Cunningham, who passed away in 2011; a brother, Walter Cunningham; and three sisters: Marie C. White, Frances Brown and Mildred Wertman.
Earl proudly served in the U.S. Army and was a decorated WWII veteran. During the war, he served as an ambulance driver in the European Theater, most notably at Normandy and later in Austria and central Europe.
He was employed by Verizon Communications until his retirement in 1982. Prior to his that, for more than a decade, he served the residents of Tyrone as the local Verizon installer. During his retirement years, Earl enjoyed attending auctions and working in his vegetable garden. He was also an active member of the American Legion and the Pioneers, a retired telephone company group.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2017, at Santella Funeral Home, Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Chaplin Lewis Button officiating. Committal with full military honors will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations in memory of Earl be made to a charity of one’s choice.
