Joseph R. Hershel

Feb. 23, 1955 - July 26, 2017

Joseph R. Hershel, 62, Hollidaysburg, died Wednesday at his residence, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late John J. and Jean (Moyer) Hershel. On June 30, 1979, he married Bonnie Biter in Loretto.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years; three children: Jordan of Raleigh, N.C., Matthew of Pittsburgh and Sarah of Hollidaysburg; seven siblings: Gloria (Fred) Kuntz of Lilly, Sally (Fred) Behe of Lilly, Elaine (Max) Roberts of Enterprise, Ala., Carol Schultz of Odenville, Ala., Marcia (Ray) Thompson of Elba, Ala., Arthur (Carrie) of Keedysville, Md., and Bruce (Deb) of Lilly; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Patrick.

Joe served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, having been stationed in Korea. In 2016, he retired from Cookson Electronics, Altoona, after 39 years of service.

He enjoyed working on cars and was known by his family as “the fix it man.” He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he enjoyed landscaping around the house.

He was a former member of Lilly American Legion and former coach of Hollidaysburg AYSO Soccer. He served as a volunteer for Hollidaysburg Boy Scouts, and he was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. today, July 28, 2017, at Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, where a vigil service will be held Friday afternoon. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Our Lady of the Alleghenies Catholic Church, Lilly, the Rev. Anthony Lagarsky celebrant. Committal will be at St. Brigid Cemetery, Lilly. Military rites will be conducted by Lilly American Legion.

The family suggests that contributions in Joe’s memory be made to Blair County Hospice, 106 Zee Plaza, N. Juniata St., Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.
