James L. Black Sr.

James L. Black Sr. 84, Dysart, formerly of Duncansville, died Saturday at home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Point, Bedford County, son of the late Harry and Clara (Price) Black.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, the former Alda Swain, whom he married March 28, 1953, in Winchester, Va.; a son, James Jr. (Patricia Nedimyer) of Altoona; a daughter, Elaine Cogley of Duncansville; four grandchildren: Jennifer Sral, Adam Black, Justin Cogley (Brittany) and Jordan Cogley; a great-grandson, Stone Sral; and several nieces and nephews.
The last member of his immediate family, Jim was preceded in death by an infant son, Stephen Lloyd; three brothers: Bernard, Robert “Bob” and Charles; and his foster parents, Sherman and Mary Truax, who raised Jim in Whips Cove, Fulton County.
Jim was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, where he served as a paratrooper and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was co-owner of C.R. Black Coal and Oil Company, Duncansville, for more than 25 years. He enjoyed hunting, camping and traveling.
Friends will be received from 1 until the 3 p.m. service Wednesday at Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, the Rev. James Balzano officiating. Committal will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dott.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Jim be made to a local hospice.
