Melvin R. Brubaker

June 28, 1924 - May 16, 2017

Melvin R. Brubaker, 92, Altoona, and most recently of Arbutus Park Retire­ment Commu­nity, Johns­town, died Tuesday after a long and happy life.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Thomas E. and Ethel (McFarland) Brubaker. On Sept. 25, 1944, he married Madeline E. Schneier, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 19, 1985. He then married Marian B. Johnson on Dec. 27, 1986, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 26, 2014.

Surviving are two sons: Gregory R. (Karen) of Indianapolis, Ind., and Thomas F. (Margaret Kelly) of Johnstown; a daughter, Janice R. (Kenneth) Dodd of Dandridge, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Kay Johnson of Maricopa, Ariz.; a stepson, Mark R. Johnson (Pati) of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and a sister, Mary Ellen Jones and husband, Colson, of Altoona.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill; and a sister, Shirley Weidel.

Melvin was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, serving from March 1943 to February 1946. His last year was spent as a staff sergeant on Guam, performing aircraft electrical maintenance on B29s. He also served in the Air Force reserves from December 1947 to December 1951.

In February 1983, he retired as a service foreman for Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania after 35 years of service. For another 14 years, he continued working as a part-time employee for the Wissinger organization.

Melvin was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Altoona, where he was a communion assistant, sang in the choir, served on council and was a Sunday school teacher. Later, he became a member of Simpson-Temple United Parish, Altoona.

He also worked with the Altoona High School Class of 1942 committee for class reunions. He was a member of Hiram Lodge No. 616, Jaffa Temple Color Guard Unit and 19th Bombard­ment Group Association.

Friends will be received from 4 until the 7 p.m. memorial service Friday, May 19, 2017, at Simpson-Temple United Parish, 2212 Sixth Ave., Altoona, Pastor Denise Arpino officiating. Arrangements are by E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona.
