George ‘Smiley’ Hileman Jr.

May 5, 1925 – April 28, 2017

George “Smiley” Hileman Jr., 91, a resident of Hollidaysburg Veterans’ Home, formerly of Greenwood, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late George Hileman Sr. and Florence (Gonsman) Hileman. He married Aline Virginia Pentland on Dec. 20, 1947, at Pleasant Valley Assembly of God, Altoona. She preceded him in death on May 22, 2013.

Surviving are two children: Deborah L. Walters of Hollidaysburg and Stephen G. Hileman and wife, Cheryl, of Altoona; seven grandchildren: Tammy and husband, David, Nickie and husband, Brian, Shawn, Stefanie and husband, Al, Travis and wife, Samantha, Corylee and wife, Allison, and Aaron and wife, Melissa; four great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Chelsea, Olivia and Riley; a son-in-law, Alvin Walters of Duncansville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol L. Walters; a son-in-law, Dave Walters; two brothers: Robert and William Hileman, and two sisters: Bertha Myers and Blanche Delozier.

George was a United States Navy veteran of WWII. He served on the USS Montpelier and received numerous medals. He retired as an equipment operator from Peoples Natural Gas in 1983 with 33 years of service and was an active member of Altoona Bible Church, where he served on various boards.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling and woodworking.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2017, and from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Altoona Bible Church, 3017 Union Ave., Altoona, Pastor Stewart W. McClelland officiating. Interment will be at Claysburg Union Cemetery.

In remembrance of George, the family requests that contributions be made to Altoona Bible Church, Missionary Fund, 3017 Union Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.

The family finds comfort in II Corinthians 5:8, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”
