Irene A. Lovell, 94, a resident of Bethany Village-The Oaks Nursing Center, Mechanicsburg, formerly of Camp Hill and Blandburg, died Sunday at the center.

She was born in Blandburg, daughter of the late Calvin A. and Lena (Arnold) Thomas. On Aug. 28, 1948, in Bellwood, she married John “Jack” G. Lovell, who died March 10, 2007. They had resided in Camp Hill for 45 years before moving to the Bethany Village Retirement community in 2002.

Surviving is a daughter, Sharon M. McGinty of Carlisle; a son, Duane T. Lovell in Florida; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by three sisters: Catherine Kostyack, Ellen Berger and Lillian McClellan; two brothers: Calvin and Robert; and many nieces and nephews.

Irene was a 1941 graduate of Reade Township High School and had served as a Tech 5th grade in the U. S. Army during WWII. She was especially proud of her time spent in the Women’s Army Corp (WAC) and the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp (WAAC) during the war. She was stationed in Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield, England, and Vitry, France, where she worked in foreign correspondence. Her stateside assignments included work in New York City and for the War Department in Washington, D.C. She retired in 1975 after 19 years of employment as a buyer for the Naval Supply Depot, Mechanicsburg.

Irene had been an active member of Camp Hill United Methodist Church. She greatly enjoyed gardening and was an excellent cook. Her greatest enjoyment, though, was spending time with her grandchildren.
