Merrill R. ‘Red’ Coady

Merrill R. “Red” Coady, 93, Epworth Manor, formerly of Bellwood, died Thursday evening at Epworth Manor, Tyrone surrounded by his loving wife and family.
He was born in Bellwood, son of the late William Edward and Mildred Armstrong (Longenecker) Coady. On May 20, 1946, he married Betty Grace Daugherty in Cumberland, Md.
Surviving are his wife of 70 years; four children: William (Wanda) and Barbara (Bob) Hockenberry, both of Bellwood, Russ (Deb) of Tyrone and Ron (Ingrid) of Ocala, Fla.; six grandchildren: Cory Coady, whom he raised in his home, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Jody Adams of Bellwood, Terri Pearce of Tipton, Jim Dillard of Gaithersburg, Md., Brian Coady in Virginia and Misty Steiner of Wilmington, N.C.; 14 great-grandchildren; and three siblings: Betty Langer in California, Mardell Steinbauer of Harrisburg and Lemoyne Coady.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry A.; a granddaughter, Tina Showalter; and six siblings: Chandler, Donald, Eugene, Iva, Irene and Marlene.
Merrill was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1941-1945 in the South Pacific during World War II. He retired in 1985 as a maintenance technician at Bellwood-Antis School District. He was a member of the John M. Anderson Post 424 American Legion and VFW, Bellwood, and a former member of Excelsior Fire Company No. 1 of Bellwood and Tipton Fire Company.
He enjoyed woodworking and tinkering in his garage.
Friends will be received from 12 to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Inc. Bellwood. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, at the funeral home, Pastor Ben Woodring officiating. Interment will be at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood.
The family suggests that contributions in Red’s memory be made to Excelsior Fire Company No. 1 of Bellwood.
