James Michael Zeak, 84, Altoona, passed away Sunday at Maybrook Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.

He was born in St. Augustine, son of the late Francis and Marie (Flick) Zeak. On Nov. 29, 1952, he married Nancy A. McGrath.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years; three sons: Francis Zeak (Pam) of York, Russell Zeak of Altoona, and Edward Zeak (Kathleen) of Hanover; three daughters: Ann Knipple (Rick) of Poquoson, Va., Barbara Fieldhauson (Pam Porch) of Lavernia, Texas, and Marjorie Zeak of Altoona; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Dorothy Moyer (George) of Altoona, and Theresa Ellenberger of Warriors Mark; and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Zeak.

He was preceded in death by a son, William; a sister, Helen Bisceiglia; and four brothers: Richard, Donald, Eugene and Patrick Zeak.

James was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. In 1997, he retired as a carpenter/welder from Conrail after 30 years of service, and he had worked at Veeder-Root for 15 years.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Altoona, as well as Juniata VFW Fort Apache, Bellwood American Legion and Bavarian Aid Society. He was a past member of Sinking Valley Country Club and Brush Mountain Sportsmen Club. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, reading and sports.

Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at St. Marks Catholic Church, Altoona, Father Ronald Osinski officiating. Committal with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
