Mildred Melvina ‘Mel’ (Laughner) Burger
Mildred Melvina “Mel” (Laughner) Burger, 90, Davidsville, formerly of Riverside, entered into the arms of Jesus on her 90th birthday at Laurel View Village, Davidsville.
She was born in Johnstown, daughter of the late William B. Laughner and Rose Mildred (Huff) Laughner-King. She married Clair C. Burger on Aug. 2, 1947.
Surviving are her loving husband of 67 years; a loving son, David of Dayton, Ohio; a loving daughter, Debbie Shoff and husband, Brian, of Johnstown; and two precious grandsons: Jeremy Shoff and special friend, Megan Nonnemaker, and Jesse Shoff and special friend, Jessica Long. She also enjoyed the company of her special grand-pets: Joe and Glen.
She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Bertrand D. King; her grandmother, Maude Huff; and a sister, Shirley Mae Laughner.
Mel was a graduate of Johnstown High School. Over the years, she had been employed by Physicians and Dentists Bureau and Crane Co., both of Johnstown, and Johnstown Credit Bureau. She was a member of the former Riverside Grace Brethren Church, now Davidsville Community Church, where she held various positions over the years, such as church secretary and treasurer. She also helped with Bible school and the Keenagers group. She was also a longtime member of the Riverside Ladies Auxiliary.
Mel loved gardening with Clair and freezing and canning the produce Clair raised. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and family vacations out West, to Canada and to Sunset Beach, N.C. Most of all, she loved being a wife, mother and grandmother, caring for and nurturing her family and always telling them, “I love you and be careful.” She was always serving others in some capacity; that was her greatest joy in life. She will be forever loved and always missed.
