John E. Ferry

John E. Ferry, 96, Altoona, died unexpectedly on Thursday afternoon.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late John P. and Elizabeth (Parks) Ferry. He married Betty E. Simington on Jan. 24, 1940, in Cumberland, Md. She preceded him in death on Nov. 17, 1996.

Surviving are a son, John (Marsha) in North Carolina; two daughters: Loretta Sanko of Altoona and Margie Yingling (Denny) of Tipton; five grandchildren: Cheryl Vaughn, D.J. Yingling, Ryan Koelle, Chrissy Koelle and Rachel Koelle; several great-grandchildren; and his companion of 14 years, Shirley Boore.

The last of his immediate family, John was preceded in death by two brothers: Charles and Leslie; and a sister, Esther McClain.

John was a 1938 graduate of Altoona High School. He retired as a machinist from Penn Jacobson, formerly Butcher & Hart, and he previously had worked as a blacksmith for the Pennsylvania Railroad.

John was a lifetime member of Jaggard First United Methodist Church, Altoona. He was a former member of German American Veterans, the Moose Club and Newburg Fire Company.

He loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed camping with the Coachman Club, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and playing softball in his younger years.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, in Stevens Memorial Chapel, officiated by Pastor Charles Reinaker. Interment will be at Carson Valley Cemetery, Duncansville.
