Helen M. Helsel

April 28, 1925 – July 3, 2014

Helen M. Helsel, 89, Blue Knob, rural Portage, Greenfield Township, went home to be with the Lord late Thursday evening at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, after a brief illness.

She was born near Duncansville, daughter of the late J. Elry and Mildred (Snare) Coy. She married Carl F. Helsel on Dec. 24, 1943, in Woodbury.

Surviving are her beloved husband of over 70 years; five sons: Ed and wife, Georgette, and Tom and wife, Elaine, all of Blue Knob, Dave and wife, Janet, of Altoona, Don and wife, Sue, of Claysburg and Joe and wife, Brenda, of East Freedom; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Byron.

Helen was a 1943 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. She was primarily a homemaker but also, along with her husband, assisted in the daily operation of the family’s dairy farm in Blue Knob. She was a member of Puzzletown Road Bible Church near Newry.

She enjoyed bowling and spending time with her family and served as the former camp cook at Mountaintop Bible Camp, Blue Knob.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2014, at Puzzletown Road Bible Church, where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, Pastors Jon M. Gross and Lynn F. Johnston officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Moriah Church Cemetery, Blue Knob.

The family prefers that memorial contributions be given to Puzzletown Road Bible Church.
