Charles W. ‘Charlie’ Fisher

Charles W. “Charlie” Fisher, 92, Mallard Drive, Bedford, died Wednesday at Pennknoll Village, Everett.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late John E. and Minnie Bell (Gates) Fisher. He married Betty E. Blyler on Aug. 15, 1942, in Altoona, and she preceded him in death on July 10, 2003.

Surviving are a son, Thomas and wife, Shirley, of Reading; four grandchildren: Duane and Chuck of Pottstown, Troy Allen in Texas and Beverly Ann Whaley of Tampa, Fla.; a step-granddaughter, Desiree Moyer; three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two brothers: John E. Jr. of Hollidaysburg and Dennis B. of Jacksonville, N.C.; and a sister, Barbara Nichols of Cincinnati, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren; a daughter, Bonnie Lee; three brothers: Donald, Paul and E. Wayne; and five sisters: Katherine Henry, Arlene Engel, Yuvette Orischak, June Lightner and Lilly Mae Heffner.

Charlie served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during WWII. He flew 86 missions in a P-47 Thunderbolt in the European Theater. He worked as a civil engineer for Gannett, Fleming, Corddry & Carpenter Engineers in Harrisburg and retired in 1980. He was a former member of the Bedford Elks Lodge 1707 and loved golfing, hunting and coin collecting.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2014, and from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday, July 21, 2014, at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, Bedford, Pastor John Bennett officiating. Burial will be at Bedford County Memorial Park with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
