Dorothy G. Waite

Dorothy Grace Waite, 82, Martinsburg, went home to be with the Lord on Friday afternoon at her home, after an extended illness.

She was born in Woodbury Township, rural Williamsburg, daughter of the late Donald L. and Margaret Grace (Rabenstein) Bousum. She married her childhood sweetheart, John H. Waite, on Oct. 14, 1950, at Williamsburg Episcopal Methodist Church by the Rev. William Snyder. John passed away on Oct. 8, 2013.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan E. Stern and husband, Jerry, of Martinsburg; a son, Philip J. and wife, Julie, of Roaring Spring; five grandchildren: Jason Stern (Megan), Gretchen Stern Bettwy (Joe) and Jaraka, Victoria and Joshua Waite; two great-granddaughters: Evalyn and Ella Bettwy; a sister, Arlene M. Steiner of Clearfield; and a brother, Donald L. of Hollidaysburg.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.

Dorothy was a 1949 graduate of Williamsburg High School. She was primarily a homemaker, but was formerly employed as a waitress at her family’s diner. She had also worked at the Dean Theater & Shop, H. D. Mingle’s Five and Dime Store, Bowman’s Store and finally, as a cashier at Wineland’s IGA Foodliner, Martinsburg.

Dorothy was a member of Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church and its Barachah Sunday school class, where she formerly served as class secretary and, until recently, was in charge of mailing cards to her classmates. She also had formerly assisted with the youth program. Along with her husband, Dorothy had served on the church deacon board, having been appointed a deaconess for nearly 30 years.

She was a member of D. Merle Tipton V.F.W. Post 43, Ladies Auxiliary, Martinsburg.

Dorothy enjoyed cooking, baking, family genealogy, bus trips and travel, assembling a cookbook for each family member, reading her Bible and other good books and spending quality time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughters.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014, and from 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, with Pastors Robert Russell, Philip Waite, Brian McCall and Ryan Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church or Target One Ministries “Memory Garden.”
