Richard K. ‘Ski’ Mitkowski
Richard K. “Ski” Mitkowski, 71, Altoona, died Friday at UPMC Altoona following an extended illness.
He was born in New York, N.Y., son of the late Charles W. and Elsie E. (Antesberger) Mitkowski. He married Barbara Ann Minster on Oct. 26, 1968, at Our Lady of Lourdes.
He is survived by his wife of Altoona; a son, Steven (Kim) of Bowling Green, Va.; a daughter, Diane Hatch of Altoona; four grandchildren: Kyra, George and Sianna Hatch and Raegan Mitkowski; a sister, Barbara Iuzzolino (Robert) of Greensburg; two nephews: Bob and Mike Iuzzolino; and a niece, Rachael DeGennaro.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary DeGennaro.
Ski was a graduate of Altoona High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from F.L. Smithe Machine Co. Inc. as a machinist, with nearly 30 years of service.
Ski was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved history and archaeology, playing bingo and spending time with his family.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday May 5, 2014, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by Monsignor Timothy Stein. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery with military honors.
The family requests contributions be made in memory of Ski to Hollidaysburg Veterans Home or to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society.
