Minnie S. (Greenleaf) Dean, 95, Martinsburg, died early Saturday morning at The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg.
She was born near Martinsburg, daughter of the late Harry C. and Minnie B. (Replogle) Greenleaf. She married John L. Dean of Williamsburg on Dec. 24, 1937, and he preceded her in death.
Surviving are a son, Sam and wife, Carolyn, of Martinsburg; a daughter, Nancy Krider and husband, Richard E., of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren: Sue Ellen Krider, Cindy Standen, Richard Krider, Beth Parrish, Margaret Pontzer and John Dean; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous cherished nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by three brothers: Lester, Orville and Martin; two sisters: Dorothy Gill and Elizabeth “Betty” Ake; a great-grandson, Will Standen; and a foster child, James Irvin.
Minnie was a 1936 graduate of Martinsburg High School.
She was a homemaker; and for 17 years, she was employed as receptionist and secretary at Young’s Inc., rural Martinsburg. She managed farm meal planning, cooking and entertaining, which she loved, along with her job and numerous church and community volunteer responsibilities.
After marriage, Minnie and John moved to Pulpit View Farm in 1939. The farm/home was the hub of extended family activity and served as “home” to numerous Brethren intern/ summer pastors, district youth leaders, two exchange students and business personnel, until it was sold in 1985. At that time, Minnie and John moved to a cottage at The Village at Morrisons Cove.
Minnie was a lifelong member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg. In addition to teaching youth and adult Sunday school classes, she served in a variety of leadership roles in her church, Middle District and regional and national levels. Additionally, she was active in 4-H, County Extension, Martinsburg Civic Club and Order of the Eastern Star. In 1979, she published “Aunt Minnie’s Country Mixins.” The original, second and third printing copies of the cookbook are cherished possessions of family members and friends. Minnie was honored in 1992 with the Good Samaritan Award for her volunteer service to the Morrisons Cove Home, now The Village. In 1987, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the Martinsburg Area Jaycees.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Memorial Church of the Brethren, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014, with Pastor Joel F. Nogle officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Memorial Church of the Brethren, Home Nursing Agency Hospice, Camp Blue Diamond or Morrisons Cove Memorial Park.
