Mary E. “Nell” (Thomey) Travers, 101, Bryn Mawr, formerly of Altoona, died peacefully April 15, 2014, at home.

She was born in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland.

She is survived by her daughter, Marie Buchanan (Thomas) of Bryn Mawr, and by many nieces and nephews throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Nell had been employed at the U.S. Naval Base in Argentia, Newfoundland, where she met her future husband, John P. “Jack” Travers, a native of Hastings, who predeceased her. After leaving Newfoundland, Nell came to the United States with Jack, became a naturalized U.S. citizen, and worked for many years for the federal government in Washington, D.C.

Nell enjoyed reading, sewing and crossword puzzles, and she was a devoted Catholic who loved her Lord Jesus and his Blessed Mother.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2014, in Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, Bryn Mawr. Interment will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Hastings, later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, Masses in her name would be appreciated.

Arrangements are by Stretch Funeral Home, Havertown.
