Lawrence E. ‘Larry’ Davies
Lawrence E. “Larry” Davies, 72, Hollidaysburg, died early Monday morning at his residence.
He was born in Blairsville, son of the late Kenneth Daniel and Emily (Jones) Davies. He married Ruth Ann Dunlap on Aug. 8, 1964, in Blairsville.
Surviving are his wife; two sons: Lawrence Edgar and wife, Patty, of Pittsburgh and James Norman and wife, Liz, of Selinsgrove; and four grandchildren: A.J., Ren, Daniel and Carolyn.
Larry was a 1959 graduate of Blairsville High School and a 1963 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree, where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He also attended graduate courses in special education and psychology at Penn State and IUP. He retired in 2001 as a special education teacher from Bellwood-Antis School District, and he had previously been employed by the Spring Cove and Williamsburg School Districts with 38 years of total service.
Larry attended First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg. He was a member of Juniata Lodge 282, F&AM, Valley of Altoona, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Jaffa Shrine and Jaffa Cycle Corps, having served as president, captain and secretary. He was a trustee and potentate’s aide and served on the entertainment committee for many years. He was a member of the Jaffa Roadrunners; Jaffa Hillbilly Clan, Horseshoe Curve Chapter 74; Royal Order of Jesters, Altoona Court 70, where he was currently serving as director and for many years served as impresario; Order of Quetzalcoatl, Colotic Miztli 91 (the “Q”); and the Altoona Shrine Club.
He was vice president of Intermediate Unit 8, a Middle States school evaluator for special education, a life member of the Phoenix Volunteer Fire Company, Hollidaysburg, and a member of the Heidelberg Country Club.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a Masonic funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friends will also be received from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Thursday, May 1, 2014, at the funeral home, Pastor Duane J. Coy officiating. Interment will be made at Blairsville Cemetery.
